Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC)

CPDLC is direct text based datalink communication between the aircraft and Air Traffic Control (ATC). It allows routine air traffic instructions and requests to be transmitted as datalink text messages to a specific aircraft, replacing traditional voice communications. Communication errors such as simultaneous transmissions and misheard voice messages are avoided.

Rockwell Collins CMU-900Aircrew workload is decreased as there is no need to monitor all ATC transmissions on a single frequency and screen out instructions directed to other aircraft. The crew can read and acknowledge CPDLC requests and instructions directly back to ATC in text.

LINK 2000+ is the Eurocontrol Programme which coordinates the implementation of operational CPDLC in Europe. LINK 2000+ CPDLC is similar to the FANS CPDLC system currently used in North Atlantic airspace, however, Link2000 uses VDL Mode 2 datalink and ATN (aeronautical telecommunications network) instead of ACARS.
